Sitting Meditation

Many people are attracted to learn meditation because they experience some restlessness or peacelessness in the mind – feelings of dis-ease. When attending to physical disease doctors prescribed medicine a sensible diet, exercise and a balanced lifestyle. Meditation provides a diet of sensible thinking, that with regular practice help you to find that point of balance and harmony in your inner world of thoughts and emotions.

Hundreds of studies suggest that meditation doesn’t just decrease stress levels but that it also has tangible health benefits.

Physical Benefits of Meditation

With meditation, the physiology undergoes a change and every cell in the body is filled with more energy. This results in greater feelings of joy, peace, enthusiasm as the level of energy in the body increases.

On a physical level, meditation:

  • Lowers high blood pressure
  • Lowers the levels of blood lactate, reducing anxiety attacks
  • Decreases any tension-related pain, such as, tension headaches, ulcers, insomnia, muscle and joint problems
  • Increases serotonin production that improves mood and behaviour
  • Improves the immune system
  • Increases the energy level, as you gain an inner source of energy

Mental Benefits of Meditation

Meditation brings the brainwave pattern into an Alpha state that promotes healing. The mind becomes fresh, subtle and beautiful. With regular practice of meditation:

  • Anxiety decreases
  • Emotional stability improves
  • Creativity increases
  • Happiness increases
  • Intuition develops
  • Gain clarity and peace of mind
  • Problems become smaller
  • Meditation sharpens the mind by improving focus and relaxation

Meditation makes you aware – that your inner attitude determines your happiness.

Personal Experience

I have been practicing Raja Yoga meditation for the last 25 years and for me, being introduced to this practice was the single most important life-changing thing that I have ever experienced. I now regularly teach courses and seminars so I can share with others the benefits I have gained over the years and also recommend meditation to many of my patients. After all good health is not achieved just by focusing on the physical symptoms, rather our mental and emotional well-being are essential elements of our overall health.

As a starting point my advice to you would be to forget almost everything that you have previously heard or read about meditation. Don’t worry about mantras or chanting or sitting in uncomfortable positions because when you break it all down meditation is not at all difficult, but rather is something really simple and practical. Meditation is nothing more and nothing less than simply thinking. The journey of meditation is all about discovering what and how to think, whilst I meditate. I will share with you basic techniques to help you relax and to think simply, and from there the possibilities are endless.
